EMI Exchange Message Interface

I need to write an app to parse an EMI file. This will be something that won't be used but a couple of times and the company I work for doesn't want to spend the money ($600.00) for the 1,500 page document available at Does anyone happen to have any experience dealing with this type of file that could help me with the Category, Group, and Record Types?
