Embedded Documents in varbinary Field

I am designing a new call logging system for in house use that will use VB.NET & SQL2K. As part of the system, we would like to be able to embed (or rather, insert) related documents as the current Notes-based system can and Word & Outlook are able to do.

I assume that I would want a varbinary field to hold the data and have read Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 308042 (HOW TO: Read and Write BLOB Data by Using ADO.NET with Visual Basic .NET) on I am happy with this article, but wondered:
[ul][li]Is varbinary the correct type to use?[/li][li]What should I actually store in the field?[/li][/ul]I could store a Word document, but don't really fancy the associated overhead or reliance on Word to do the editing. Rich text would be good, but can it embed documents?

I suppose I could have a sub-table to hold varbinary items containing each embedded document, but would rather have a flowing rich-text narrative with embedded documents, hyperlinks, pictures, etc.

While not strictly a SQL question, I can't really think of a more appropriate forum. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
