I've recently installed Exch2003 on my domain and my clients are able to log
on through Outlook. but when they send a message they do not
get a NDR message nor do the recipients receive it. I checked in the queue and there
are not messages waiting. In the event viewer I'm getting Event ID: 2004,
Source: POP3 Service stating the SMTP store driver failed calling GetString
Recipient SMTP address.

Does anyone know what this means?

Have you verified that all services are started? Did you verify that the Virtual SMTP Server is running?

Can you send/receive Internally?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Hi Mark,

All services are running as is Virtual SMTP.
It appears that when you send a mail from external you get a reply from postmaster@mydomain.com saying delivery has failed, but emails sent internally and from internal to external disappear from list on queue but do not get delivered?
It appears that the connection between the mails coming in and getting routed to mailboxes has been lost somewhere.
My ISP has told me that the only traffic they can see are failure reports being sent out to people trying to email me.

Verify that your DNS is configured properly to start.

DNS Settings:

Configure the server NIC to only list itself or other DCs, no ISP DNS gets configured on the NIC TCP/IP properties.

In DHCP, set the DNS scope option to only provide the IP of your local DNS server

For any statically configured IPs, make sure the DNS only lists local DNS servers and not ISP DNS.

In the DNS snap-in on the forwarders tab enter your ISP DNS.

Check that you MX record points to the right IP. verify that your firewall has port 25 open.

Verify the Information store is running too.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

Is the Virtual server set to deliver emails to your firewall? Is the firewall set to accept emails and forward / pipe them on?

This sounds like a config / DNS issue rather than Exchange. For simplicity, maybe try to get OWA working from outside using the Exchange server as the OWA home then once that works from outside, email will probably flow too.

Hi,

Have moved a couple of mailboxes from one 2003 server to another. Now I can email from internal to external, but not internally or externally to internal. Have checked all DNS issues and all is ok. Have checked Firewall (mananged by 3rd party, which is a major pain) and they have all rules set up correctly. Have checked MX records with ISP and they are sending to correct address. The mails seem to be stopping once they get to the server. It looks like they are being sent, I get no error messages apart from external to internal, there is nothing in the queues?, they go from outbox immediately, but they seem to disappear!
I am going to try and get the external mail working from the one server for the few accounts and if that works, move all the mailboxes over. I was planning on removing the other servers at some point anyway, now it's moved up my list of priorities.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
