Hi all,
I am trying to set up my Exchange server so that people can receive emails larger than 5 megs.
I have set this up in ESM under the SMTP default virtual server and also the SMTP connector in Routing Groups. The other setting is under Global Settings and then Message Delivery. I've set a max limit of 10240kb but this doesn't seem to work.
Currently, under 5 megs we get. Anything from 5 to 10 megs go missing.. there is no undeliverable generated. Emails larger than 10 megs an undeliverable is generated... really strange. If I set the limits back to 5 megs then everything else is the same but emails from 5 to 10 megs, an undeliverable report is generated.
I am running Exchange 2003 with SP3 and the Post SP3 update. I am running in mixed mode though there's only this one server.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can set it so that we can receive emails up to 10 megs?
Thanks

Are you limiting sending email to 5Mb?

-------------------------------

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Must finish the message before hitting submit.

Exchange sets both incoming and sending to the lower limit (bizarre isn't it). If you increase the sending limit then you will be able to receive the email ok.

I've set 10240kb for all the limits.. however, it seems to have capped at 5 meg! Anything else it could be folks???

Have a look at the user accounts in ADUC, check that mail limits haven't been imposed there

User account/properties/exchange general/delivery restrictions

Cheers

Thanks Paul.. they are all set for default limits which I guess is the 10240kb I set??

Yup

I cant think of much else at the moment.

What happens when you remove all your restrictions in ESM and test with 7Mb ?

Just a thought, do you have a separate email gateway? If so make sure that's not blocking them.

When you convert from MAPI to MIME so that the message can be sent over the internet, the size bloats about 30%. If you want the limit to be 5M in outlook set it for 6.5M for SMTP.

When I remove restrictions.. it still stops emails above 5 megs! I can't understand it!

There are four places to set message size limits; global settings, the smtp connector, the smtp virtual server, and the mailbox. You've mentioned two, the smtp connector and smtp virtual server, have you checked the other two? Sounds like it's set in global settings for a smaller size.

Thanks all.. I checked the link that xmsre sent through and all my settings are set to 10240kb. However, I also read that the size of SMTP messages that are sent between routing groups and to the internet increase by about 30 percent if they contain binary attachments or other 8-bit data. I wonder if this is causing the problem....

I want to be able to receive 10 meg attachments through so perhaps I need to increase the limits to 14000kb. I'll test and post the results.

Thanks!

Can you send 5MB+ to an internal user without a problem?

Let me restate that. Can you send from one internal account to another internal account an attachment bigger than 5MB without a problem?

Hi guys
Yes, it worked fine internally! I think it was the 30% increase thing.. I changed the limits to 14000kb and I can now receive 8 and 9 meg files fine!
Thanks :)
