Email sending incorrect text

Hi
I have a user running Windows 98 on a Fujitsu laptop who when he sends an email with a £ sign in it. After the email is sent changes to ? and when you view the email at the recipients end they too display a ? instead of a £.

I have tried swapping locales and regional settings but i am still unable to get a £ to display as a £ and not a ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
