I have Emachines H2542 and the usb ports are not working. I have Windows XP Home with service pack 2. USB devices draw power from the port because an USB mouse does light up but it does not work. I have tried reinstalling the OS and the drivers but they are not working. Any ideas what could be causing this? I attached a link with a posting with another forum that someone else posted with the same problem

Are we talking front ports, rear ports, or all? Are there any yellow exclamation points in Device Manager? (Start->Run-> devmgmt.msc) Expand USB Controller for more information.

Both the front and rear ports have the same problem. No are no Yellow warning icons in the device manager. It is like the computer does not know a USB device is plugged in.

Check in the BIOS, make sure USB is enabled. Loading default settings should work. If there's a newer BIOS available you might try that.

You mentioned that you installed the USB drivers! well I find this strange as XP with SP2 doesn't need them.
As long as you have installed the platform drivers ie: Via/Nvidia/SIS or Intel (whichever ones they are) you don't install seperate ones for USB.
Closely examine ports for shorting/bent pins.
If all else fails you may have a dead USB controller which can be overcome by fitting a PCI USB2 card or similar addon device.

I know installing separate drivers for the USB is strange but I was out of ideas. I did restore the default BIOS settings but it isn't working. I actually can't locate the BIOS updates for this computer on the Emachines website. If any knows where I can locate Emachines bios updates that would be great. Also the I noticed the internal audio card has the same issue

Well to be honest this sounds like a motherboard problem and even more so knowing that this is an emachines.
We had 4 very similar Emachines in at once some weeks back, all with motherboard and power supply issues.
If this were mine I would swap out both motherboard and power supply.
This is the replacement mainboard we use and in most cases does not require a reformat (has the same Intel chipset) so just boots up and finds everything (might need to install the drivers)

Socket 478 boards are getting rarer now but you might still be OK for one of these replacements from Asrock:

Don't forget a new PSU (Emachines are notoriuos)
