elegant fuse?

What's the best way any of you have found to make it look like a "fuse" (basically a line) is burning? Either a lightning (real bright) or fire-type (flame) burning would be fine, but I haven't had much luck doing either. Anyone have ideas?

Animated flame.gif in a movie clip moving along the line as it burns?
Then maybe retrace the animation (in Flash) over the animated gif, to reduce the size of it all by getting rid of the animated gif, when done in vector graphics?
