Hi all,
At one of our nodes we have a Succession 1000M(cabinet) running release 4.5 which utilizes dedicated "dark" fibre feeds to (qty 3) IP expansion cabinets at remote buildings. Because our system is SSC it seems we have to upgrade to a different processor (CP PM) and Media Gateway when we go to Release 5.0. When we upgrade would it make sense to physically isolate the "elan" network using the existing dedicated fibre feed to the IP expansion cabinets ? The tLan portion of the cabinets would connect to the existing data network via vlans etc.at the remote buildings. Personally I always liked the idea of physical equipment separation between the tlan and elan but those days may be coming to an end.

Has anyone tried this setup or is this basically a complete waste of resources ?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as always.

What you are describing is the ideal set up fot this type of configuration. Unfortunately now days customers are unwilling to do this and it is done via vlans. the only thing wrong with this is that where we as PBX techs were in total control before we now have to rely on data techs. Have you ever seen a patch panel. Enough said.

In an ideal world I would physically separate the Elan and Tlan. Then you have to look at the cost of having an extra switch at each location with fiber connections back to the MDF. Either way will work fine it is just a matter of preference.

Hi tnphoneman

Thank you for your response and confirmation. I think I will try and continue with this approach until it is no longer feasible.
