EditCommandColumn in Datagrid

I don't quite understand how this command works. The book I'm using doesn't give many details. What I'd like to do is to allow for 3 of the 4 columns in the datagrid to be edit-able at once (ideally for all the rows, but I'd be happy with one). Also how do I give the Edit button a CSS-Class? I can give the table cell it's in a class, but not the button itself.
