greetings!

what would be an economical, but comprehensive backup solution if you had a company with the following amounts of data:

* NOW = has 1.5 Terabytes of live data, plus you wanted to store system snapshots of the business' 12 windows servers

* FUTURE = data volumes would probably grow to 3TB of live data + the server snapshots, within a couple years

in the past an LTO-1 tape based backup was done, but going forward it would be preferable to have a disk-to-disk based backup solution, and be able to archive the data off-site over time.

thanks much for your advice/thoughts!

We've decided to go with an Idealstor Teralyte appliance. It uses 2xSATA2 disks which are currently at 1TB. So that's 2 TB now, and more as SATA2 expands.

There are a number of different disk based backup solutions you can choose. You could go for the purchase of something like Idealstor solution or you could go for a managed solution. There are a number of service providers who can provide a managed solution for the backups which includes offsite synchronisation for DR purposes. Even with the amounts of data that you are considering this is quite feasible.

Cybernetics makes similar equipment to Idealstore using SATA drives. They have some unique D2D2T solutions.
