The network guy before me... who now happens to be my boss so I have to tread lightly... decided to buy two unpowered Cisco switches 3524-XL-EN on Ebay about a year ago. These handle about 15 devices each in two separate buildings on our main campus.

Last week, one of the switches started acting weird. The port went up-down-up-down-up-down... Friday, it rebooted itself 4 times during the day. Saturday, I happened to be in the server room working on a different box and it rebooted again. 5 minutes later, once more.

I've since unplugged it, and transferred those devices to other switches in the rack.

Now, since he bought this on ebay, is there any way to get Cisco support on it? We have smartnet on EVERY device, including our Call Manager and 200+ phones, but not these two switches the best he remembers.

Am I out of luck? I think the answer is yes, but thought I'd ask.

Sadly,

Cisco has a lifetime warranty on all thier switches (that means the life of the product, not your lifetime). Give 'em a call. They will replace it.

Yes, even though they have a lifetime warranty on these, don't expect an advance replacement.. So they'll take their time getting you the replacement switch. If you want the switch quickly, get a smartnet contract..

You might also try to talk them into it since you have smartnet on your other devices, they cut you a break..

That problem has happend to me on a 3524 and 3548. Cisco just replaced it. One switch wasn't under smartnet, so it took two weeks to come. :-(

I always give them a sob story. Blah, Blah, Blah and I usually get it within 2 days.
