After installing many systems and having loads of problems getting media files to play with various codec combinations I now use BSPlayer which so far plays everything without the need for any codecs installed at all.

It has played mpeg, divx, xvid, ffdshow and ac3 files all on a clean installation.

It's also a very good player that loads very quickly and doesn't try and get loads of information from the internet.

It's available at:

PS. It's Free, and I have no association with the creators at all.

It is a nice product, and thank you for bringing a classic again to the attention of the Forum.

But the claim above is suspect.

Bill

Since posting that tip, I've had to install the AC3 audio codec as one batch of files didn't have any sound until I did so, but other than that everything else has so far worked fine.

This is from the official website:

Supported formats (some formats require additional codecs to be installed):

Video avi, mpeg 1, mpeg 2, xvid, divx, 3ivx, ogg, ogm, matroska, asf, wmv etc
Audio wav, mp2, mp3, ogg etc
Images jpeg, gif, bmp (DirectX 9 required)

Either you or the apllication itself, but someone HAS to install the different codecs...

Rather than make a small quibble into a large issue:

There are terrific third-party freeware viewers for XP. johnogq perhaps overstated his case slightly, and baljipn offered a second choice.

But in any case do not expect, in fact plan for, codec issues as you browse the internet and find media. And fortunately there are available, usually free, the codecs you might need to add to your library.

Since posting the original thread I have started to use K-Lite Codec Pack available from:
