Heres the deal, I'm not a computer whiz obviously. I have an old systemax computer. intel celeron with only 128 MB of RAM. I'm trying to figure out how to upgrade. How do I know what kind of RAM to buy? I have my comp. case open and am still not sure where to look.

First you need to deceide what you expect from this system. You don't give any speeds but a celeron will not ever become a fast computer. What do you plan to do when your done?

The answer is "42"

Lay: If you want a quick and dirty way to figure what kind of memory upgrade is possible goto this website: you can input your computer manufacture and they will give you the best upgrade possible for your older system.

To be honest though I can't see where on a really old system that doing an upgrade would yield you any noticeable results. If it were me I would start the process of saving little by little and buy a new computer, or even more fun build your own, with the resource of tek-tips at your disposal we can walk you through this process, but this is just my humble opinion.

I would also say too that if you have taken the time to open the computer case then you should also take the time to learn what things are in the box and where different things are located.

Familiarize yourself with the different components so that when you open the box it isn't so foreign to you, you can find various motherboard layouts on that give excellent pictures with diagrams letting you know what the alien landscape of a motherboard looks like before ever opening the box.

i went to crucial.com to check out upgrades and systemax was not on there

you 're right there is know excuse for not knowing what's what in there. I apologize for the lack of knowledge I just got my first computer a couple months ago. I feel like I've been in a cave or somwthing. However, I will figure it out. Thanks for your time!

Oh no need to apologize just wanted to encourage you to do some homework before going any further with your upgrade or future PC building, so as to make your frustrations less and the time you spend on it more enjoyable.

It seems that we are so quick to write off a system nowadays!!!!

It's not everyone that is a power user, lots of people just want internet access and a general word processor etc etc.

And, looking at that very meagre 128mb of ram! I would say that there is a great deal of general performance to be had IF this machine is running XP?
XP almost imediately starts page filling on a machine with this little memory (writing to the hard drive once memory resourses run low) so putting another 256mb stick in the machine will instantly free the hard drive from extra corricular activity.

It would therefore be advantagous if you could perhaps remove the memory, post what is written on the label, tell us how many keyways it has (1 or 2) etc etc more info generally, can you see a motherboard make and model?

thanks for responding, the machine is runnung xp right now. I found the model GA-6VX7B-4X. I went to Bestbuy and a stick of pc100/133 256MB sdram to put in it.

As I said, the extra 256mb will certainly make it run a lot smoother, with less hard drive activity and the "hanging" that you must have been experiencing.

Supports PC-100 / PC-133 SDRAM

Fingers crossed.

That is definitely what the problem was. I can't thank you enough. I feel like a real ass now though realizing how basic that was. One step at a time I reckon!

As a Side note. On the Crucial Website, there is a memory detector tool. Helped me find the correct memory for my brothers mystery machine !

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.
