In the opinions of the legends on this forum - is it of any benefit to earth the chassis of the control unit, when the power-cord is already earthed, and if not, why does AVAYA provide that Earth-nut?

Normally you will find that the entire cabinet has been earthed, so anything installed into said cabinet is covered by that. If the cabinet isn't earthed then it is recommended to earth the unit independently (not that I ever have :))

I think it was to do with analogue lines and the fact they carried electricity as well as voice, but again as I was never trained to do it I honestly do not think it is necessary.

The cabinet is wall-mounted so not earthed. The IP500 is earthed via the 3-Core main supply. The trunk-lines are in fact anologue. My question is, is that enough (grounded by default with the mains cord)?

I think with an earthed mains cord you will be fine

The earth nut is for countries that only have 2 pin mains cords & so do not supply an earth.

(I am not an electrician so could be wrong)
we have certainly never bothered with an external earth on any of the 4000+ systems we look after in the UK (going right back to the Network Alchemy range)

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

We had this issue come up just this week. Electrical earth ground may not be telco ground. If there is potental difference between the two you can get hum on analog lines and flaky behavior from T-1/PRI.
In large buildings like a retail mall it isn't uncommon to have poor grounding in a suite and the dmarc could be blocks away.
We ground all of our systems. And we also service large multinational corporations that take safety very seriously.

Dermis and feline can be divorced by manifold methods.*

Thank you all for your advice - I will go ahead and ground it anyways - costs nought
