We are an old time ARCserve shop with a shiny new Exchange 5.5 server with ARCserve 7 and the Exchange agent. We are getting:

##3 E8602 Failed to read from database (DBNAME = Individual Mailboxes\xxxx\xxxx, EC = EXCH Exchange Agent - (418) "Application run out of memory",)

almost every night and almost always on the same mailboxes and so I did some research which led me to a post SP3 DLL upgrade for the DB agent. But this was included with SP4 which we are using so that isn't the fix.

This weekend I ran about 6 brick level backups in a row, over an hour or two. Each one suffered from the error but each one had a different mailbox in error.

My fix, till we get a real fix, is to do my full nightly backup (including bricks) and then after that has finished, I do a separate brick level backup to the same tape.

We have the luxury of time and tape availability so this is not a big issue.

When someone thinks they have found a fix or some further clues they need tested, I'll be happy to try it on our setup.

Apply the following fix from the Ca Website-APAR #: QO22840 DATE: 21 AUG 2002. I addresses this exact error.
Brick level backups fail with error (418)
"Application run out of memory" in the ARCserve
activity log when backing up emails with over 1000
recipients

Thanks nobeta:

This appears to be the post SP4 patch that fixes almost exactly the same things the post SP3 patch fixed. I'll put it in place and do some testing next quiet time I get with the server.

(I started my search for a fix a month ago when the problem first arose and never went back to see if a new(er) patch had been posted.
