One of our clients has Arcserve installed and whilst it runs fine it still (occassionally) comes with the E8511 error. Failed to connect with client agent. (ADDRESS=127.0.0.1).

Any ideas what might be causing this? Sussed out CA's website and it seems to indicate an ipx/spx problem but client is running Windows server 2003, no Novell in their network at all, any assistance appreciated.

Well if the IP address you have put in is right (127.0.0.1) then why are you trying to backup the local machine using a remote client agent (loopback address) ?

127.0.0.1 is the default ip of every network card out there, the ip it SHOULD be looking for is 10.8.8.14 which is the subnet of their network.

Well that explains why it failed to connect to the client at 127.0.0.1, because there is no client at that address.

So the question is why did the job think there is a client at that address. There is not a default address. The job is packaged with a specific address and security information for each client agent. Further more if it did get packaged with the wrong information it would be consistant instead of random.

Is it always this same client that gets missed?

Maybe it is a hosts, DNS or other network problem as it is intermittant?

Can you fill us in on versions/Builds of ARCserve you are using and how you have the agent added to the GUI eg auto-detect, IP, use computername resolution, etc.

Using ver 11.1 for Windows (English). Might have resolved it last night, took a good look at the job log and we client is backing up exchange at both database level and document level and not sure they have paid for the latter.

Still failed evidently :(
