E4102 Unable to open database. (DATABASE=astpsdat, EC=256)

I've found no pattern so far, but here is what happens:

I've got 2 tape backups, one 40G one 80G. I don't think the hardware setup matters all that much at this point. The 40Gig never fails.... however, the 80G often fails, pretty much randomly with that above error.

Here is a scenario of late: A few days ago, it gave the message about 20 times in a row in my log files and the job failed. Another day, I got the message twice in different times of the backup, but the backup finished and passed. I've re-initialized the database SEVERAL times hoping to fix it. The error has been the same since the beginning. The Computer Associates site has next to nothing on this problem. Besides re-installing the entire ArcServe, anyone have any suggestions/solutions?

Are you using VLDB or SQL for the database?
If SQL are you trying to back it up?

It's not SQL. It's the backup that comes with Arcserver.. since it looks like an old BTRIEVE database, I'm guessing it's the VLDB.

In the CA Knowledge base, they have a few ways of doing DB Fixes and Re-Indexe but they don't seem to work. I'm running Arcserve 2000 and it's patched pretty good.

Betrieve!

Are you running NetWare or Windows?

I was thinking Windows.

It would probably help to put a portion of the log in from just prior to the error so we can get a better idea of what and when it is happening.

The error will occur only when accessing the Database, like such:

i 1/13/04 22:00:09 Begin cleaning database.
E 1/13/04 22:00:09 E4102 Unable to open database (DATABASE=astpsdat, EC=Error Code = 256)
i 1/13/04 22:00:09 End cleaning database. (CLEANED=0)

This is one example. I have other that when the tape is being used, the error message will repeat itself several times at every minute or two for about an hour:

i 1/14/04 00:18:29 2 Back up Session 4 on Media TUESDAY
E 1/14/04 00:19:30 E4102 Unable to open database (DATABASE=astpsdat, EC=Error Code = 256)
...
repeated about every minute until 1:50:13
...
i 1/14/04 1:51:17 63 Databases/Transaction Logs (6,769.13 MB) Backed Up to Media

Any clues?

I highly recommend setting up the SQL database in Arcserve. The default database is unreliable at best. I'm not sure what the specs are for Arcserve 2000, but with Arcserve 6.0 the database was EXPECTED to crash after reaching a certain size (I believe it was 100mb, might have been lower - it's been a while). Then I would receive exactly the message you're getting now. Installing the SQL ended that nightmare.

Looks like the astpsdat database is corrupt, and it is doubtful it can be repaired.

I recommend just initilizing it.
Server Admin
Database tab
Operation
Initilization
then pick the asptsdat database
You will loose the detailed information from the database (files and directories backed up), but then you probably can not access that data anyways.

See if that does not get it working.

As for using SQL no doubt about it, it is a better database. Personally I would like CA to drop the Velocis VLDB and go with MYSQL. So if you are already running SQL and have a SQL admin then it is a given that you should convert over (how to do it has already been delt with in another thread). Other wise stick with VLDB and run the utilities. There is a readme in the ARCserve folder and some faqs in this forum that explain the utilities.

I've done full init of all the databases several times (as stated above). I will try just the one database. Since I run a very small backup library, I can easily merge what I need so I didn't mind re-initing the whole thing. As for SQL, I also agree. I was just trying to avoid having to install the MSDE in an already lagging computer. I have plans to change the computer. Most people get scared of SQL because of the price tag, but if you don't need security or backup, then you can get the MSDE (it's just the SQL engine) for free.... and "free" is a good word when you present solutions to your boss...

;)

This is the first I heard of MSDE Microsoft Desktop Engine. Do you know for a fact it works?

I have to check into it.

Oh for regular SQL Server it does not have to be on running on the same system. The install or conversion lets you select another system for it.

HI,

What service pack are you running on ARCserve 2000?

If you are using ARCserve2000 for windows, have u applied SP5 that is avaialbe on the CA Support site?

Hope this helps

Cheers

The MSDE works great. It's the SQL core engine, just without the bells and whistles. As for the service pack, I'm on SP5 with a few additionnal post packs. I will be changing the machine shorlty for a more powerfull one and I will get the MSDE engine to do the SQL databse for Arcserve. Since I don't really need a backup of the database, this plan works out fine for the time being.
