Hello,

I have Exchange 2000 installed on a member server in my AD domain. Apart from the obvious additional load that making this server a DC, is it a good idea to make the server a DC? I gather this would make disaster recovery a little easier and improve directory lookups if it was a GC server.

Thanks

Phil

I have had E2K running on a 2K DC in the past and have had no problems with it mate so I sujest you go for it mate and make the member server a DC. Matthew Hankins

This actually makes disaster recovery harder since more than one thing can be down if this box was to crash. Dan

That is one problem we noticed, when our ISA went wrong it was harder to get up and runing again beacuse we had to justify turning one of the DC off which ment they would loss other functions Matthew Hankins

I already have three DC's within my domain. Also having more than one GC server will not cause problems if I bring down one DC. That is the whole point of having multiple DC's. the reason I ask this question is that I have read different views on making a E2K server a DC.

Thanks!!

Well when we had it on a DC we only had two DC's but we had no problems with it being on a DC the only problem we go was we got a Virus once but that was nothing to do with it being a DC. In my opinion you might aswell make it a DC as it is goin to make no problems if you already have 4 Dc's witch are in use

But... If your DC crashes and you can't restore it as a DC from the system state backup you will need to do metadata cleanup of AD.

Just know how to do this if that is what you decide. I personally wouldn't do it (make it a DC) if time to restore was a big concern. Dan
