E-Mailing Alerts

Hello all, I have a real stupid question for you all;
I have just installed Veritas 9.1 on a windows 2003 server. Here is my question, How do I get Veritas to e-mail the alerts. I went in and configured the e-mail alerts under tools, but everytime I try and test it, it does not work. I am currently pointing the mail to my relay server, so do I need to install SMTP service on my server?
