Hi
This may appear to be a daft question, but i am trying to understand how exchange server works when sending mail.

If a company has a LAN network that has an exchange server and outlook installed on the client machines where e-mail can be sent within the company, how can e-mail be sent to a diffrent company in a diffrent city if there is no direct connection between the 2 companies.

Is their any links on the web that explains this, or can someone give a brief overview of how this works.

It is a little daft actually but thats OK.

You (the sender) have to have an internet connection available to the exchange server either directly or through a mail relay.

The same is true of the receiver.

The servers find each other using the internet DNS system (Domain Name Service) based on the part of the email address after the @ sign (the domain).

just thing of it thje exact same way as the post office works

the system is the exact same - down to the mail waiting in an in basket/out basket at a sorting office
