E:\ is not accessible

I have having trouble with my Toshiba DVD-Rom SD-C2402. When I try to read a cd I get "E:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready." Does anyone have any advice? I am using Windows 98 second edition. Thanks.

I don't know what a drive mangler is, but I ran compaq diagnostics and it recommends I verify that media is present in the drive.

The device mangler is a corruption of the term device manager, which tends to corrupt your hardware installation if you do things wrong.

As in , start, settings, control panel, system, device manager. Where you can look at the resources and settings of the hardware, including the CDROM and the controllers that allow signals to get to it.

The device manager says the device is working properly.

You could try deleting it from the mangler and see if it picks up on the next reboot. Generally have found that if the next reboot doesn't set it up right that the device is dead.

Unfortunately CDroms are mechanical devices so they can wear out but sometimes such a device can be retreived by carefully stripping down and cleaning the optical head with a cotton bud and glass cleaning fluid (very gently)
I have something like a 50% success rate after such a clean.

I deleted the dvd from the mangler and rebooted. The dvd reappeared on the mangler, but still did not work. Does this mean it is dead?

I hope this might help but I was having the same issue with the same Toshiba DVD drive in my Compaq. It played a DVD for a week and then stopped and couldn't recognize it. It was still play an audio or data CD. Anyways, just out of trying! I purchased a $9 DVD cleaner from Phillips at Walmart. I ran it and in 5 minutes, I was watching DVD's again with no errors. It's worth a try. Good luck
