We are planning a NT 4.0 to AD Migration. I implemented Windows 2000 DNS, WINS, and DHCP to prepare. Clients are using default config, but will not update their host record in DNS. Pre-W2K clients register in DHCP as client1.mydomain.com, and update a record in DNS. W2K clients register as client1 in DHCP, and will not update DNS. Some 2000 Servers with static IP addresses automatically update their DNS record, but not all of them. The check box on the client is check to register in DNS. What am I missing?

On your win2k server go to start --> programs --> Admin tools --> DHCP. Right click on your servers name and select properties. Click on the DNS tab and make sure the DHCP is setup to update your DNS.

wbg34 is correct, but here's something else to look into. Make sure browsing is turned off on the w2k pro machines. Don't think this is the total solution, but I think you may have multiple issues to deal with. Good luck.

Where do I turn browsing off on the client? Why would that affect it? The pre-W2k clients register with DNS due to DHCP registering for them. I don't know why the W2K stations won't.

W2K pro machines with browing enabled sometimes think they are the master browser. I had this problem a couple of years ago trying to get pro machines to join a domain. If I remember correctly, it's computer browser in services. There is a regedit change also, but I don't think this is needed. This may have NOTHING to do with your problem, but I like to cover all bases. In the event log, I found that the pro machines gave me messages about not being able to find a master browser, so they made themselves master browsers which kept them from joining the domain. Good luck.
