I just installed a creative labs 6x speed dvd rom into my computer. I'm using an asus a7v mb, 800mhz duron processor, 256 megs of ram and a 32 meg nvidia tnt2 videocard. When i tried to play a dvd the picture was choppy and slow. does any one have any ideas why this is happening, or how i can fix it?

DVD ROM

Need some more info on your setup:
- did you install the DVD drive on the same IDE channel as the hard drive?
- what kind of DVD software are you using?
- is DMA enabled (look in properties under Device Manager)
- operating system (Win98, Win2K, etc.)?
- how many processes do you have running in the background while playing a movie (check task manager)
You shouldn't run into problems assuming you have enough free resources available on your system. 256MB of RAM and 800MHz cpu is more than enough to run software decoding. If the problem persists, you may want to consider installing a DVD decoder card. This will greatly enhance performance. You can buy a Creative Labs one for around $19 (check out click DVD Accessories, click Decoder)

Actually, now that I've taken a closer look on Pricewatch.com, I would suggest you go with a more expensive package: Sigma Designs for $40 at Sufi Technology. All the cables are included with this one along with the "manual".

Do a CRTL-SHIFT-ESC which should bring up Task Manager. Check both the Applications tab and Processes tab. Make sure you have a small number of items under Applications. If you have any antivirus software running, disable it as well.
If this doesn't help, count the number of items you have in the Processes list and in your system tray. We need to disable as many as we can. If you're not sure what each icon or entry is, then post back.
To be honest, you shouldn't have to disable too much for it to work right in XP. Try visiting Creative Labs website and browse the support section...some DVD drives prefer to leave DMA disabled.
