I've just installed a DVD-ROM and a DVD/RW in my pc running win xp. I haven't really tried burning anything yet but audio cd's play just fine in both drives. I installed the PowerDVD software that came with one of the drives and DVD's play just fine. However, I can't get any sound from DVD's when I use Windows Media Player. I just upgraded to Media Player 10 but I still get no sound. I have tried switching the audio from digital to analog within Media player but still no sound. Any suggestions?

have you tried other video players? am not sure but i think you can use divx player to play dvd's on your pc (though not automatically). anyways, you could try it. if it doesn't, you might want to google for "free video players" and i know it wil give you a lot of results to choose from.

hope this helps. peace! [peace]

Thanks for the advice but I actually want Windows Media Player to work. I'm able to play DVD's with sound using PowerDVD, but I'm just curios why media player won't.

maybe the necessary plug-ins/codecs for wmp10 hasn't been installed yet.

Torturedmind, I believe you may be right. Thanks for the advice.

Have found that Microsoft's Media Player v. 10.0 has negatively affected other third party software. Several options. 1) Look for new driver for your DVD player. 2) Remove Media Player v. 10.0 and go reinstall v. 9.0.

The second option was a problem. Could not uninstall Media Player v. 10.0. Even went to the trouble of deleting each file relating to Media Player individually. All files showed delted, yet when I download V. 9.0 the message read that since v. 10.0 was already on my system it would not install v. 9.0. Looking back at the deleted file area, 7 files from v. 10.0 had returned. Out of desperation I reinstalled the complete v. 10.0 and all of a sudden my third party software started working again. Might related to the order of installation. However my third party software company was aware of the problem and were redesigning there software.

Not a very technical reply, but it did work for me. Good luck.

TRapheld,
DVD player driver would not be the issue here since sound plays in PowerDVD. Also, remember that optical drives (like CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs) do not use drivers per se. Instead, Windows relies on their firmware which is built into the drive. If anything, you could try upgrading that. However, it doesn't seem like it's an issue dealing with the drive itself.

sixstrings4,
I'm not sure why sound won't play in WMP10, but definitely try going through the motion of uninstalling/reinstalling it. Also as kilroy already mentioned, try updating its codecs from MS's website. I'm curious, but do you really need WMP as the main player? PowerDVD should work just fine, if not give a better picture quality overall.

Actually I installed WinDVD and it works even better. Then I went back to Win Media Player and sound was working there now too. I uninstalled PowerDVD because I just wasn't as happy with it. But all else is working well now. Thanks for all the help.
