I just recently burned some data disks for my daughter in DVD+R format which she couldn't read on any of the machines where she's spending the summer doing research. I thougt DVD+R's could be read by computer DVD-ROM's? Am I wrong, can they only read DVD-R's, or does it depend on age, manufacturer, etc...

Yes, DVD+R disks are read by DVD-ROM. Some burning software needs you to close the Disks once you have finished burning.

Imagine if every Thursday your shoes exploded if you tied them the usual way. This happens to us all the time with computers, and nobody thinks of complaining.
