I'm thinking about getting a Recordable DVD drive for my computer.

I'm hearing different things about DVD+R, DVD-r and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head...

What format should I look at getting? Or is there a unit that will be able to use what ever become's the standard with a bios update or some thing??

Any thoughts on this would be great...

Thanks

Off the top of my head as far as compatibility:

DVD-R DVD-R/w (notice the - sign)
DVD-R is compatible in many set-top players.
DVD-R/w is compatible in most set-top players that can play DVD-R

DVD+R DVD+R/w (notice the + sign)
DVD+R is compatible in 40% of available players
DVD+R/W is compatible in MOST of those players that can play DVD+R

HP and SONY puts out DVD+R DVD+R/w drives

Pioneer, Technics, off brands put out DVD-R DVD-R/w drives.

has a compatability chart posted by people who have players and have tried different formats in them.

I understand DVD-R is the format most likely to playable in console devices, but I occasionally find older DVD players (what a peculiar phrase!) that cannot play it.

I would like a format that can be played in every console DVD player, but I suspect that is simply not do-able.

Edward, unfortunately that wont be a possibility, again because DVD players produced 5 years ago (when they first came out) just didn't have the software to support DVD-r's

Like Some CD-rom drives just wont support Cd-r/w.

My first dvd player (which I still own )cannot play anything other than commercial DVD's. I've made a VCD on every possible brand of CDr's and CDr/w's and none will play. I've made dvd's using DVD+R and DVD-r and none will play. Such is fact about this ever changing format.

I have since bought 5 additional dvd players and 4 dvd rom drives since then; 2 cannot play dvd-r's but they can play sVCd;s and vcds; 1 of them can only play vcd's and svcd's burnt to Silver cd-rw's

The other 2 can play DVD-r disks, 1 can only play pioneer DVD-r disks.

The last can only play DVD+R/w discs , but has no problems playing any vcd or svcd disc

You can't win in this genre.

Yeah, this is what I figured. I can still burn to VHS tape, plus I figure a lot of this'll settle out in another five years. Seems similar to the mass confusion surrounding the advent of CD burners.

True, but cd-writers have been existence for nearly a decade. DVD writing on a personal/home level has been available for only a couple of years. ^_^ . It took cd-writer manufacturers 4 years just to get it right.

Yeah, like I said. We've got time...

Well, the "time" may be longer than how long it took cd-writers to become mainstream enough to keep it to one "format". With the RIAA,MPAA and the Hollywood execs, it may take a bit longer for DVD to come to an agreement on exactly what format to support. Till then; I'll just conitnie to back up the tapes i've had for 20 years.

I have a quick very similare question... For the time being... I am looking for a program that will allow me to burn SVCD's...

I'm looking a getting Easy CD and DVD Creator (the newest version). But I can't tell is if has the encoder to go from AVI to MPEG2??

Yeah, on my first glance through Roxio's dox, they don't immediately say, but they seem to imply that Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 ( is a soup-to-nuts DVD creation solution, so at least you'll probably be good there.

I couldn't quickly find any data on burning SVCDs with this software.

You could simply write to Roxio Customer Service ( and ask 'em or do a Google search for Best SVCD software.

Best svcd so far that i found was the Ulead DVD movie Factory bundle (as far as creating an svcd). Roxio sucks. Nero on the other hand does good burning for svcd's.
