I installed a new hard drive, clean installed XP Pro, and now my DVD Player says I don't have a DVD Encoder installed. The DVD Player is a Matshita SR-8583 and came with the original computer. I can't seem to find the encoder on the "restore software" disk but then again, I am not sure what I am looking for! Any help?

In order to play a DVD movie, you must have the MPEG-2 codec installed which normally comes with 3rd-party software like PowerDVD or WinDVD. It is not built-into WinXP.

Perhaps the software wasn't part of the system restore image. If you still have problems finding it, try this site for a free download:

Thanks CDogg! I can now play the video part of a DVD in Real Player but I am not getting any audio. Adjusted the volume control and all the obvious things.(To me anyway!)
What's Next?

Which item did you download off that website? If you just downloaded the MPEG-2 decoder, that would explain why there's no sound.

Instead, download the "Moonlight-Elecard MPEG2 Player v. 2.1 release " at that site which should have AC3 (audio) decoding built-in.

That's exactly what I did! Thanks again! Back to the drawing board! (;-)
