Hi all.

Just got a new PC custom built, it has a Pioneer DVD-RW drive. I think it's a dual-layer. However, for some reason, I cannot access the drive in NERO to be able to burn files on. I have this other program I use to convert divx files to DVD, which seems to burn without any problems. I can also read data from the drive. So the only problem is adding files onto a program like nero to burn onto a DVD/CD. It just doesn't seem to recognize it. I don't get any error messeges or anything. Kind of baffled over here. Any help is greatly appriciated.

Regards, Tam

Have you got the latest updates for Nero?
If the drive is new Nero needs the latest updates so that it can recognise the drive.

The version of Nero that you have would be useful here.

The model of the Pioneer drive will also help.

When using Nero Burning ROM, you should see the option to create either a CD or DVD when the "New wizard" pops up. Are you seeing that over on the left-hand side? What are you selecting there?

If the NERO version that you are using did it come with a drive you had bought? if yes, then that NERO is tailored to recognize only that drive and no other, this version is called OEM, and will not work with the new drive...

Solution: DL a new version from the NERO website, uninstall your old one and then install the new one... old serial may or may not work...

The Nero was an old one, I believe Nero 5. The drive is new. I think that may be the problem. Will try what you recommended. I'll find a new version of Nero, and see how that works out.

Thanks for your replies. was helpful.

If you have Nero 5 you really do need to upgrade it. Version 7 is now available, although Version 6 may sort out your problem. Depends on what you can afford. Your old serial will not work with the newer versions, so you will need to purchase an upgrade. I wouldn't suggest that you try anything but Nero. In my opinion it is the best one out there.

Different versions of nero are what depends if you can burn. Like theres basic, ultra and delux. As for getting new version Ive heard a lot of problems concerning 7. So I would reccomend sticking with nero 6 ultra if you do upgrade. Just check on your version on there site to see what all yours supposed. To find out your information open nero, go to help then about. It will tell you your information there.

I am with EFreak on this one... stick for the time being, with V6.6.x.x (the latest one)...

Nero7 is a bit too bloated, and has stuff that you prolly do not need...

EFreak - the version that you have heard all the probs with should have been 7.0.0.1 (first release), now under 7.0.5.4 most probs should have been adressed...

Ah ok, didnt know as I use 6 myself just seen some problems being reported concerning 7. 6 works fine for me so I have no reason to upgrade.

Yeah, considering that the upgrade is a 100mb+ DL...

and V6 only a third (35mb +-)...

now you know why I said BLOATED... LOL...

good grief lol yeah thats a major size improvement, something that big makes me wonder what they loaded into it, either that or used a crapload of .bmps lol. Sounds like a lag fest for computers.

Yes it does include PICs, for the DVD authoring tool, and other stuff I had a hard time getting rid off, ie. NeroScout and NeroHome... do not ask what they are lol... NeroScout gets installed if you want to or not, there is no way to deactivate that as an option, it places an ICON under My Computer, which can be edited out through a Registry Fix...

I think that V7 is to be thought of as a MEDIA Enhancement, kinda like XP-Media Center...

Yes, I do agree that Nero 7 is rather bloated, but it includes everything else that you need to download seperatly for version 6.
Version 6 has four downloads & if you want them all you are still looking at nearly 85mb, I know this is 20mb less than 7, but 7 works for me.
Most people would only want the burning rom part so 35mb would do it. Don't get me wrong I think version 6 is still very good, but 7 will support newer drives. I don't think 6 is being changed in anyway now. So if your drive isn't supported version 7 is your only option, as regards Nero.

Well one thing, I dont think cd burners are going to get any faster on speed wise unless they find a way not to shatter the disc. There already at the point of some doing that lol.

@Kestrel1 - V6 just had gone from subversion 14 to 18, so they are still working on it... do not get me wrong, I am using V7 and it does work nicely...

@EFreak - Tell me about it... at present I think that 56x speed is the tops... but who knows what where and how, they are progressing...

Must admit, I haven't looked to see what they are doing with Nero 6. Just assumed, I suppose.
How fast do you want a drive anyhow?
Newer technologies are always coming in, what with Blue Laser & HD.
CD's are going to go one day. Still very useful though.

Thank you people. Your advice was spot on.... upgraded to Nero 6, avoided 7 because as badbigben pointed out, it's a hell of a lot smaller in size. Works perfectly now. Recognizes the drive and burns like a charm...

Thanks again....
