I've apparently made a stupid mistake in the Services list for XP SP3, and perhaps a bit enthusiastically disabled one service too many.

Now, none of my 2 DVD drives show up any more.

I've seached Google high and low for which service is required for DVD drives on XP, but I cannot find any article that does not deal with hardware issues.

It is not a hardware issue. Before I was disabling services, they worked fine.

The services currently running are :
B.I.T.S.
COM+ Events
Creative Audio
Crypto
DCOM
DHCP client
DNS client
Event log
Fast user switching
Help and Support
HID Input
IPSEC
Logical Disk manager
Network Connections
N.L.A.
Nvidia display driver
Plug and Play
Print Spooler
Protected Storage
Remote Access
R.P.C.
Security Accounts mgr
Server
Shell Hardware Detection
SSDP
System Event
Telephony
Terminal Services
Themes
Windows Audio
W.M.I.
Workstation

I'd appreciate if someone could specify which service is required for the OS to recognize optical media.

Thanks in advance,

Pascal.

I've got nothing to hide, and I'd very much like to keep that away from prying eyes.

I can only recommend the following Website to cross reference, if indeed it would be a service that stopped the DVD from functioning...

Windows XP x86 (32-bit) Service Pack 3 Service Configurations

Question:

Have you physically checked if the DVD has a good power connection and that the (I assume) IDE cable is seated correctly?

Does the DVD get recognized in the BIOS, e.g. can you boot from it?

Are the DVD drives recognised in Device Manager? If they are, you could try deleting them, then do a Scan for Hardware Changes. This might enable any relevant drivers to be called for and replaced.

There is also a registry issue that causes DVDs to disappear. Has to do with filter settings. It may, or may not, be your issue.
Try a google search on DVD disappears filter.

Thank you, Ben, for your link. I've bookmarked it for future reference.

I have not changed anything in the number of services running, but I did follow G0AOZ's advice and deleted the devices in the Device Manager.

On the following reboot, they reappeared in my Windows Explorer and function normally.

So basically I still don't why they were deactivated, but they work now.
Oh well.
Thanks for the tips, everyone !

glad that you got it running...

usually, if you can boot from the optical drives, and they do not work in windows, then it is a windows issue...

be it either the mentioned Upper and Lower Filters, or as in this case a hick-up with the drivers...
