Hi

I am haveing a problem with multiple users on multiple platforms in my company. We are running Outlook 2000 on both Win2k and XP Pro boxes.

Intermittently I get calls from users saying that they are getting duplicate messages. All users have one account each and they are Internet only POP3 accounts. When this happens I notice that two copies of OUTLOOK.EXE are running in the Task Manager Process list. If I close Outlook one stays open. If I kill the still open one and reopen Outlook, the trouble goes away.

I have not been able to find a common usage problem as they are all different users at different times. All service packs are installed and Spyware removal programs run. We use Symantec antivirus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I have seen this article before. It states

"Then check the task manager to be sure that there is only one instace of Outlook running. Two instances of outlook.exe running can produce two messages arriving at the same time. You will need to then determine why two instances of Outlook were running in the first place."

This is what is happening. I cannot find a common denominator as to why the two instances are running. Any suggestions what might cause them to be there at the same time? The problems seems to occur if you "X" out or if you "file-exit"

Its a stumper for me!

Do the people that this happens to use a PDA or other handheld device? If autoarchive switched on or PSTfile backup switched on on the Outlook client?

Check under Tools -> Options -> Other -> Advanced to see what plug-ins and
COM add-ins are integrated with Outlook. Some will run after Outlook is
asked to exit (i.e., Outlook's window closes but then these other tools
continue to run). For example, the Personal Folders Backup plug-in runs
when Outlook is exited (and after you told it yes to make a backup) but it
only needs to run a few seconds to do a copy of the .pst file.
Also, Is your antivirus integrating with outlook in anyway?

No pda's involved. Some use autoarchive and some do not.

Add-In Manager shows "LDVP" and "Net folders" both with a check next to them.

There is nothing in the COM manager.

I have the same setup and it has never happened to me. Also Symantec Antivirus 8.1 is installed and is managed from the server so everyone has the same version and Virus files.

Those add-ins have to be defaults because I never installed any of them. There is no PST Backup installed either.

Tough one... :)
