duplicate and triplicate jobs

I have noticed an annoying problem with Veritas Netbackup 5.1. My policy for Windows machines often produces duplicate jobs and sometimes even triplicate jobs in one day. This is unnecessary, of course. Sometimes the jobs are the same time, and sometime they may be a few hours apart.

I end up cancelling the jobs. Netbackup then recreates the jobs. Apparently it doesn't know that I have manually cancelled them. The second time, the cancellation sticks.

I am close to running out of tapes for the week because of this problem.

Why is this happening?

The first thing I would look at is your start window for the scheduled backup. If the start window is larger than your retry frequency, you will see results similar to what you are seeing.

The reason you are seeing the job re-start after you cancelthe job, is probably related to backup attempts. Take a look at Host Properties -> Master Server -> Global Attributes. In the global attributes tab you will see "schedule backup attempts". By default this set to 2 attempts in 12 hours. Therefore ,if you cancel a job (Status Code 150) and it is within the start window, a second attempt by bpsched will will be made. When you cancel the job a second time, this causes the backup attempts to be exceeded and no further attempts are made.

Hope this helps.
