We want to recover one server (an Exchange 2000 box) to a new box in a DR environment as a test (AD is in place as we have a DC running that was built in the live environment).

I thought you just install the OS, install ARCserve (v11.1 in this case), merge the DB from tape then do a full restore. Unfortuantely after it reboots following the restore it gets past the splash screen but just before it would come up with the Ctrl-Alt-Del loging prompt the server reboots (and is stuck in this cycle).

We don't have the DR option running but is there a simple guide somewhere (or can anyone breakdown the steps) in order to do a full server restore from tape? There's a "Recover your Server" option but I can't find documentation on this.

I highly recoment Ontrack Power Controls as an e-mail restore utility. It is a bit spendy but it works like a million bucks and it pays for itself by not needing to maintain a recovery environment. It is faster/easier then any other method I have found for mail recovery.

I'll look into that - this is a bit more basic though, it's failing just trying to restore the OS let alone get to the point we need to worry about Exchange. I was hoping even without a DR option it would handle overwriting itself during a restore with caching etc...

The beauty of the utility is that it can open the DB from a backup file. In the event of failure you would just build a new server, set the users up with new mail boxes, and then recover their data as-needed.
