Hey I was wondering if anyone knew where to look for a solution so that I could have like 10 dumb terminals connected to a Win 2000 Advanced server to access a database. I dont know if this is possible or not. I have never seen anything like this before. But this is going to be in a very dirt factory atmosphere and I was looking for a solution to this so I didnt have to put PC's out in the plant. Any help would be appriecated.

TIA

Nate

This is very possible - and something that Terminal Server is fairly good at.

You simply install the database client on the Windows 2000 server, and use Terminal Services clients to utilise the clients to access the database. As long as the database doesn't use too many custom API calls or VB Scripts, it should work out of the box.

There are many Thin Client manufacturers that make terminals with RDP clients built in.

The database itself would need to be on a separate server, however - the combined workload would probably be too much.

Hope this helps

If you aren't particular about the database, you can use Intersystems Cache. It runs under NT/2000 and you can use TCP direct to server or serial to a terminal server then connect to server. If you go the later route you can use dumb terminals such as VT100, etc.
