I have an old Micron Vetix LXI-N Dual Pentium Pro server that I use as my home file/web/email server. The chipset is an Intel 82440FX and it has a daughterboard (SB82441FX) that houses the dual CPUs and RAM banks. I am trying to add the second Pentium Pro and I get the following error: Error 0189: Secondary CPU Thermal Trip Failure. I have tried both CPUs in each of the sockets but get the same error. The CPUs do match revisions (0617) and clock speeds (200 MHz), so I know it shouldn't be that. If I only use one of the CPUs the server boots without errors. Any ideas? Let me know if I need to provide any more info. Thanks.

Have you flushed the BIOS with the jumpers? (if it has them)
There is the possibility, of course, that the mother/daughterboards are failing, no?
Has it ever run with dual CPU's since you've owned it?

Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions, there are jumpers that reset the CMOS to defaults and those that allow booting into a recovery BIOS. I don't know if either of these are what you mean by flushing the BIOS. I suppose that the boards could be failing, but everything has worked and continues to work perfectly with one CPU. There has never been a second CPU installed, this is the first time I have tried it. Any other suggestions?

Did you also install a VRM for the 2nd processor? CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Yes, I did install a VRM. Could I have installed the wrong type or voltage? How can I know? Would the wrong VRM cause this type of error?

No. VRMs are generic, since they perform a single, simple function. Some boards require one per processor, others only require one for the 2nd. If you had not installed one, chances are the 2nd proc wouldn't even have been registered, but on some boards they are, and over heating can result from improper voltage being delivered to the CPU.

I don't want to overlook the obvious - did you install a suitable heatsink and fan? A CPU Thermal Trip event is usually triggered by an overheating CPU, but can also be triggered by a faulty heat sensor. PPros require a fairly substantial heatsink - and a little dab of thermal paste for proper conductivity.

Lastly, by revisions, do you mean stepping? I know the two terms are interchangeable, but I normally refer to the codes that look like SY002. I think this is a minor detail, and the 0x617/6.1.7 style codes are fine for matching PPros, but just want to double-check!

Hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Yes, I have a large heatsink on each processor and the server case has two large fans blowing over the heatsinks. The stepping should match. I have an SY032 and SY040 and according to this site ( they should work together.

Now I did finally receive an email back from Micron tech support and they said the lack of or wrong voltage VRM could cause this error. Maybe the VRM I bought is the wrong voltage? Should I send it back and try another one?

Scroll down that link you posted and read the section on VRMs :)

Unless VRM technology has changed in recent years (and it may well have done), they're pretty much a bunch of capacitors and a regulator gate or two that do what they're told by the CPU and motherboard settings.

Could well be a dodgy one, though - they tend to be cheaply made, so yes, try another one. Ensure it's for Ppros, and you should be OK. CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
