I ve 2 Dual partition consist of Win2000(C) and WinXP(D). (E) is for data ..

whenever i try to install a few programs i keep getting locked out of my Win2000 , i get the following message when booting up .

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted..

\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM .

Attempt to repair this file by start windows setup disk using CD-ROM , select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

problem is when i pop the CD in , it dosent pick up my win2000 partition at all , i ve reformatted both the partition 3 times and reinstalled and so far i keep getting this problem.

detail of my software im trying to install are
Win2000 - photoshop, fireworks, ultradev, flashmx, avg 7 & zonealarm .
WinXP - nortons 2003 & zonealarm only .

i cant for the life of me think what else i could really do .

Any help would be appreciated

No problem with XP install? - because issues like this (espcially if reinstalling clean doesn't fix) are usually hardware related - but I'd expect XP and NT to react similarly. Does problem start only when you install apps? If so, after which one does it start?

Are the partitions both primary?

Have you tried running without installing XP?

Have you tried just installing XP on its own and installing apps there?

btw - why are you dual booting 2k/XP

Oh man oh man , lol , i ve kinda waste a whole week doing this, i personally now thinks its something to do with AVG 7 , i ve install norton2003 onto my 2000 partition , so far so good.

I think u are right its hardware related because i ve never had so much probs like this b4, i set my win2000 primarily for my work for web design, as for winxp , i like a bit gimmicks on the side.

Im praying like hell its gonna be stable at the moment as i really dont want to find half way thru my work and this happens and the interruption is going to be horrendous.

argghhhh !!! i hope i ll not be back on this topic again, but u ll never know they way things been going all week.

Thx for the help wulluf :)

btw

Im not a great expert on this , but on previous versions of avg , i know it does a check when booting up , am i right to assume that AVG actually could have corrupted my boot ?

I'd be surprised - but haven't used AVG 7 - only 6.
