I previously had windows 2000 and xp dual booting until i reformed my c: and reinstalled xp.
xp is on my first partition and 2000 resides on a third(i think) partition on the same drive.
i tryed to modify the boot.ini file. here is my boot.ini configuration.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows Advanced Server"/fastdetect

when i try to boot windows 2000 it says
system32/hal.dll is missing or corrupted.

any suggestions would be great. thanks

These threads might give you a few clues even though they use Windows 98 rather than Windows 2000. The problems and solutions will be the same if you have XP installed ahead of an older operating system.

HOW TO: Create a Multiple-Boot System in Windows XP (Q306559)

Your boot.ini looks correct if win2k is on partition 3 (which judging by the error message it is). Have you checked in disk administrator in XP to see if this is really the case? I would try with partition(2) and partition(4) as well.
Is the 2k 'partition' primary or just a drive in an extended partition. If latter, your problem may be connected with reformatting the primary (XP) partition - I've had problems with extended partitions after updating primary - so I always use just primary ones now.

Can you boot from a win2k boot floppy? Copy the files ntldr & ntdetect.com from the win2k install CD to a formatted floppy drive, along with a copy of that boot.ini file. Boot this floppy & select 2k option.

You may really have a missing/corrupted hal.dll - in which case you could start recovery console & retrieve hal.dll from 2k install CD using expand command - or from \WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386\hal.dll if service packed.

Or you could try a repair of win2k install.

PS. have you changed any hardware since it worked/are you overclocking your cpu?

thanks for all the great info.
I finally got it up and running. i changed the partition setting in the boot.ini from 3 to 4. easy as that..
what i learned from this..always think simple.
