Can XP co-exist is the same partition as Win98SE? My workplace it kinda reluctantly migrating to XP but still wants 98 as its backup. Its an education institution so its kinda still wants to teach some old proggies together with new ones in XP.

I tried installing them both but XP starts directly from boot. Kinda like it overwritten the boot record or something. I was just wondering if it really could be possible with some manual config. Information is free....dont hog it!

It is possible to do, but you would have to install XP as FAT32 instead of NTFS. If it is booting only to XP you may have installed it as NTFS. Also try right clicking on My Computer, Properties and Advanced, then Start Up and Recovery. There you can set if it shows other OS at start up.

Hope this is helpful

Yes, they can co-exist however you need to make sure that it's using the same partition type. After you have a Windows 98 load, insert the XP disk into the system and it should autoplay and ask you whether you want to upgrade or do a clean install. The clean install option gives you the option to dual boot. When you go to setup XP, make sure that you use a FAT32 partition. Another option you could do is setup a dual boot using Partition Magic. I'm not too experienced with dual boots, but I'm pretty sure that's how you can do that. Enkrypted

Ideally each operating should have its own partition. These will require formatting and setting up before you install the operating systems. If you want 98 to see files in XP, as stated XP must be on a FAT32 partition. If you dont want 98 to see XP, XP can be NTFS. In either case XP will see 98.

HOW TO: Create a Multiple-Boot System in Windows XP (Q306559)

Its not just ideally - you are asking for trouble if you install 2 operating systems in the same partition (conflicts of interest in common areas).

As XP and 98 both use \windows as their default folder, your XP install may have effectively overwritten the previous 98 (also you don't say how you installed XP or if you did an upgrade or clean install).

If you're starting from scratch (ie, nothing to save on hard drive), a dual boot on separate partitions is definitely better idea (although you may have some issues later if you want to remove 98 - its not straightforward, especially if you want a single partition again).

Linney's link should give you some pointers - post back if you need more.

Thanks for all who replied.

I've taken wolluf's and linney's advice to heed and did the installs in seperate partitions. The dual boot prompt came up as expected at startup.

Cheers.

PS all posts help in one way or another......hence the stars. Information is free....dont hog it!
