DSL connection prob with Win XP

we finaly got DSL hooked up but when i connect my computer into the DSL it seems not to want to connect at all i have even gone as far as redoing the complete system with all fresh installs of everything and i still can not connect.. i can connect into a network with DSL but i can not directly connect to the DSL without a switch??? if anyone knows anything plzz help!!!

Call your ISP's technical support phone lines for assistance with your connectivity issue. The modem software might not be compatible with WinXP. Emachines, Celeron 600, 256 Mb RAM, 10 Gb HDD, ADSL.
