Hi, I'm trying to fix an XP Pro machine that won't startup because it says that the file: c:\windows\apppatch\drvmain.sdb
is corrupt. It suggests using the repair install feature on the Windows CD, but that takes me to a prompt. What do I do? I tried replacing this file with the one on the install CD and that didn't work.

Service Pack 1a was installed about 2 weeks ago and the automatic updates are up to date.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Use the XP CD to go back to the Recovery Console by selecting the first R(epair) option presented.

Logon as Administrator.

Type:

rename c:\windows\system32\drvmain.sdb drvmain.old
copy X:\i386\drvmain.sdb c:\windows\system32\drvmain.sdb

(Where X: is your CD drive letter.

Finally type:

chkdsk /r

(this will take a little time to complete)

When the above finishes, remove the CD from the drive and try to restart XP again.
