I am trying to setup and "editable" combobox by overlaying a text box on a dropdownlist. My problem is no matter what I do the dropdownlist is always on top of the text box. I tried using the send to back function and tried resetting the z-order manually in the HTML. What the heck is the problem?

Thanks!!!

I can't remember off the top of my head the exact name for it but there is a name for these controls which, in your case, basically means that the drop down list will always be rendered in front of the text box.

I think there may be ways around it (although not very elegant) such as wrapping the controls in different div's and making sure that the controls can't expand outside the area of their own div. You then just have to set the z-index of the corresponding divs accordingly.

If there are any simpler alternatives then maybe someone else will have some other views but that is all I can recall from my experience.

I want to say that it's something (bug?) in the way IE renders the page. Drop down lists will always be on top in IE, no matter the z-index of it or anything else on the page. I have JavaScript menus that have a z-index of 100+ and it will not cover a DDL in IE. It does, however, work exactly as expected in other browsers.

You could probably get the effect you're after with a hefty amount of fancy JavaScript, but it's likely easier to rethink your design.

Sorry I can't bring good news.

Thank you both for the response. I'm just glad I'm not going crazy. I'll try to figure another way around it!!
