I've had to visit a friends computer once a month and everytime I do it seems windows totally crashes. Im wondering about his board, he has like a 900 AMD with a SOYO board(not sure which) and he mainly uses it for sound, he has one of those Creative SoundBlaster Live boards/with control panel and thats the primary use of his computer record/mix music, and it doesn't even do that really well. Anyway I was over there last night and all of his drives say invalid media. It always seems to come down to an unknown file system on his PC and losing all of his files. I know he doesnt play with the fdisk command, this happens all of the time, on old HD's and new ones, he now has 2 new 80gig drives. His sound drops out on his computer alot, could his motherboard be bad?

Yes, it could be bad. It also may be under powered for mixing music. You don't say how much memory he has but for sound or video I would have 512 or more.

Yes, he has 500+megs, I told him it was probably his Mobo, ill tell him he needs at least 400watts he probably only has 250 or at most 300w.

sounds like he has a hardware problem of some kind - could be anything (RAM, mobo, PSU, CPU, sound card, graphics card, drive etc).

Which o/s is he running?

I'm just waiting for it to happen again. I told the guy to get a new motherboard.
