Dragging Version 2.0 into either 97 or 2000

I have bits of a version 2.0 database - the MDB file and what the user says is the SYSTEM.MDA file. I hoped to be able to use either Access 97 or 2000 to read/import/convert the database. I have used password-cracking software which tells me that the only users in the .MDA are Admin and Guest, each with a blank password. When I try to use the .MDB file I just get ...

You don't have the necessary permissions to use the XXYY.MDB object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this object establish appropriate permissions for you.

... which I can't do as these people no longer exist. Anyone know a way around this?

Thanks for any suggestions

Hi

If you have only admin and guest, and admin with no password, then security is not set up.

Are you sure you are actually using the system.mda you think you are?

Try using Wrkgadm.exe to join the correct workgroup (ie system.mda)

Ken,

Thanks for the suggestion. My suspicion is that I do NOT have the right SYSTEM.MDA file - I've just got what the user said was the right one. And I've tried joining different workgroups with no success, other than changing the users it will accept if I run MSACCESS.EXE from the command line with a /User argument.

I'm hoping there may be a way round the implicit link between the MDB and the MDA files.

check with your "User" and ask if they can open / run the db. If so, they must have the .MDA file for the db, otherwise it is probably a no go.

Michael,

Thanks for this - they can open the DB so I guess I'll just have to go over there and work out which SYSTEM.MDA they're actually using.

Actually, "they" should be able to find this in any of several ways. But it depends on their level of ability and comfort.

If they use the db through a shortcut, the MDA path may be in the link (Icon Prpperties) they use.
