I just inherited a Compaq Evo N1000c running XP-Pro w/ SP2. I have an MS Optical Intellimouse attached to it (in addition to the touchpad and stick) on the laptop itself. When I try drag a window or dragto select text, I have to move the mouse a certain distance before windows seems to decide that I really want to drag the item, at which point the item catches up with the mouse, or I suddenly have a couple of words selected.

I've tried googling the issue, I've searched the forum here but I haven't found anything.

I didn't really notice it at first but now that I have, it'sreally irritating and I want it to stop.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Check whether the video driver and direct X are up to date and the setting in direct X are suitable. (type dxdiag in the 'run' box)

You may need to reduce some video settings - like colour or resolution.

You should review the performance options in My Computer

Check the mouse settings and check you have all the correct drivers installed.

For instance - reduce the colour level to say 256 and see if the problem goes away. Or remove some of the fancy video effects (my computer/properties/advanced/performance/settings)

DirectX Diag reports that no problems were found.

Changing the color depth, and resolution didn't make any difference.

Changing the performance settings to "best performance" didn't change the effect.

It's almost like it is setup for someone who is a little shakey, filtering out some unintentional movements or soemthing.

Thanks for the input though!

None of those were it, but it got me to the right place in the Registry!

Under HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop I noticed to entries for DragHeight and DragWidth.

They were both set to 50, so I had to move an item 50 units (pixels?) before it was deemed a drag.

My first attempt was to change the values to 0, but then clciking on an item is considered dragging, and you basically end up double clicking on EVERYTHING.

What seems to work is to set those values to 4, then things drag pretty seemlessly, but windows doesn't think you are trying to drag hyperlinks. Thats the Windows prescribed default.

Thanks for you help!

why not adjust mousepad or keypad sensitivity through the control panel or check the options out on them?>

There is a point in wisdom and knowledge that when you reach it, you exceed what is considered possible - Jason Schoon

None of the settings presented for adjustment in the Mouse Control Panel Applet appear to pertain to those registry settings. Nor have any of the settings in the applet changed since I manually set the values with Regedit.
