I've done some googling and found out about printmanagement.msc which apparently can deploy printers to users/computers on 2003 R2. However, I can't find anywhere to download it and our R2 servers don't appear to have it. Where can I get it from? I've googleed printmanagement.msc download also but no luck there. Is it only for 2003 Advanced server or ...? From the M$ articles it appears to be for 2003 server R2 - doesn't say it has to be advanced edition.

Would really appreciate some help

Thanks in advance

wow ... fast reponse !! I figured it out, the document said to add the print server role to the server - but it already had the print server role installed. So I upgraded the role to R2 version and this worked.

thanks so much. Did you use the Print Manager then? Did you find it good?

It's a big improvement over the standard 2003 manager. You can set limits on folders rather than just volumes, you can also ban extensions so you could stop people keeping MP3's in their user areas.

No problem ... you've helped me out, I just hope I can convince my manager that this is a better option than using our current logon script (at least so far it seems to be). I still have one of two questions after reading the document, if you know the answers I'd apprciate it.

1. Is the assignment instantaneous (ie once policy has refreshed) or does the user need to logoff/logon or restart?

2. If I assign a printer to computers, does this mean it's available to all users who use that computer?

3. Could I enable the "users cannot add printers" and "users cannot delete printers" group policy option and would this still work?

Thanks again for your help

I was more interested in the storeage management i'm afraid so that was what i concentrated on. I did deploy some printers to machines but am unsure if you can deploy them to users specifically but as it's a GPO extension i would assume if could be applied to a users OU.

As far as I have been able to tell when using XP workstations the printer is tied to the user. But if I install the printer as Administrator the users are able to connect with out admin rights. This could also be a permissions problem with my machines and not a feature of MS.
