Downgrading Directx 9 to Directx 8

Is it possible to downgrade directx9 to directx8? If so, how do I do that? I installed ms train simulator with directx and it worked fine. After upgrading to dx9, the sounds stopped working in the game and I get an error saying the sound card isn't working properly or is not available. The sound card works for everything else. The drivers for the sound card are also up to date.
