Looking for a Word Guru here,

One of my 80+ users is having a weird effect when using one of our standard templates. The template has a one line footer which includes some DocVariable fields.

When his documents go onto a 2nd page, the Footer appears twice on the second page.

Relevant facts:
--User is using Word 2003
--This happens to none of the other users using the same template. I have also made sure the template is not corrupt...replaced it with an original, clean copy, etc.
--This problem appears for a few weeks and then rights itself. This happened to him once before. Same template, same computer, same everything. Problem simply went away.
--The template and the docvariable values in the footer are being applied by a Word Add-In written in VB6.
--I did once have one other user w/ the same problem and same result. Happened out of the blue. Stayed this way for a few weeks. Went away. No known changes made.

Can't find any reference to a similar problem anywhere. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,
AJ

We've had something somewhat similiar happen. Documents would look perfect on the print preview screen but would print with extra lines, extra characters, all spacing messed up. shifted 1/2 across page etc.

This happened on a few machines. After rebooting the machine it seemed to right itself for a while.

Not sure what the heck was causing it but by completely flushing word by doing a complete reboot helped. Simply exiting and reentering did help.

We were thinking it was a printer issue (driver etc)as this only happened on the big laser color printer and none other.

Thanks, Hect2003.

I've seen that sort of behavior you describe as well, but it doesn't look like my problem is related.

In my problem, the 2nd (repeated) line of the footer actually exists in the document. It is not phantom like what you describe. We can see it in print preview, and we have to manually delete the 2nd line to remove it from the document. So the text is actually being applied somehow.

Gerry,

Thanks for the response. The footers are static in the template. Only the field values are being generated by the Add-in.

Also will point out again that though the footer appears on page one, it only doubles on page 2 and subsequent pages. Also there is heavy use of section breaks in these documents. One document may contain many reports. Reports range from 1 to 3 pages long. There is a section break (next page) at the end of each report.

Thanks for any advice,
AJ

|Tesy this with Word in Safe Mode. From Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. This is Word in its vanilla install mode bypassing all add-ins, macros, etc. Try opening the template and testing like this.
