I just upgraded by computer from Windows 2000 Pro to Windows XP Pro. For the last two months using both 2000 Pro and XP Pro. I have gotten the following error when I go to various web sites. "“domain name” could not be found. Please check the name and try again". So I hit refresh and the site appears. This will happen twice a day for no apparent reason. Now for the rest of the day, everything is fine and I can surf with no errors. I am connecting up to a Comcast cable modem via a Belkin Wireless Router. I have the hardware firewall turned on and I have a software firewall on the computer (Sygate). I have made no changes to either in the last two years. This is an annoying problem and yes I am sure I’m typing the address right. Any Ideas?

If hitting F5 resolves the page, this indicates a corrupt index.dat file that controls your Temporary Internet Files.

If you remove completely the TIF folder, IE will recreate it anew on first start, giving you a new index.dat:

Or do the right thing and install Firefox. :)

I do use Firefox. Do you think a file that carries Temporary Internet is corrupt in firefox. If so, what is the file in firefox called?

If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can go to Tools | Options. Then choose the "Privacy" pane on the left. Then click on "Clear All" to delete all saved temporary information such as cache files, cookies, recently viewed sites etc. Thus Firefox offers a one-step solution to clear all stored data.

With the older Mozilla Suite, clearing all stored information requires multiple steps.

You can clear information in the Mozilla Suite by first going to "Edit | Preferences" and then choosing a variety of options depending on which information you want to clear.

To clear all saved temporary files, you can choose the "Advanced" section, and then the "Cache" subsection. Then choose "Clear Cache".

To clear all cookies, go to the "Privacy & Security" section and choose "Cookies". Then click on "Cookie Manager" and when the cookie manager appears, click on "Remove All Cookies".

To clear stored form information (such as keywords for searches performed), go to the "Forms" subsection of "Privacy and Security" and click on "Manage Stored Form Data". Then click on "Remove Stored Form Data".

To clear all saved passwords, go to the "Passwords" subsection of "Privacy and Security" and click on "Manage Stored Passwords". Then click on "Remove All".

To clear the list of recently viewed sites (History) and recently entered sites (Location Bar History), go to the "Navigator" section and then choose the "History" subsection. Then click on "Clear History" and "Clear Location Bar" to erase this information.
