Bit of a strange one this, though I'm sure it's a straight forward answer??!!

First a bit of background information. Recently our company took ownership of a dedicated Windows 2000 Server after we bought out a small web design company. Now we have no experience of running a Windows 2000 Server, although this is the route we would like to take because at the moment we host our clients websites with various hosting companies. Now over the weekend we applied some Windows Updates and installed some software which caused the server to crash (good start!!), so a technician had to re-format the drives.

Prior to all this we just had a single domain on the server which was accessible via and However, after the drives were re-formatted we are no longer able to access the domain using - you just get a message saying no website is configured at this address (although on some PC's it appears you just get the 404 error). But if we try accessing the domain using it prompts for a username/password, which if we enter valid details lets us in. Some my questions are:

1) What needs to be done to enable the domain to be viewed using 2) What needs to be done so that we aren't prompted for a username/password?
3) Why is it that on some PC's when trying to access we get the message "No website configured at this address", while on other PC's we just get the 404 error?

With question 2 we did play around with the permissions by using the wizard to set the permissions as per the Public website template, but this didn't seem to make any difference.

It sounds as if you have have some DNS issues. A couple of questions...

1) Is this server part of a Window 2000 Domain?
2) Have you checked to ensure the IUSR_%SERVERNAME% account has access to the websites in question?

Thanks for the reply.

The issue was with IUSR_SERVERNAME not having authority to the websites!!!
