I have just set up an AD domain on a large existing network for a small public school district. The server install went OK, a few problems with getting some of the machines to join the domain, but that has been worked out.

Student started school yesterday and started logging on to the domain with mixed results. 20% to 30% of the students are having difficulty logging in. Some of these could go to a different machine (where other students have logged on successfully) and logon without problem, but some could not. There error message I've been getting is that the domain could not be found.

I have not been able to find a pattern as to why some can log on and some cannot. The student are all governed by a single group policy.

Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you

I would really appreciate knowing the exact error message, and whether the server is Win2k or Windows 2003.

Usually, errors of this type are DNS issues: faq779-4017

The Event Viewer on the Server may hold a few clues?

Make sure you have DNS running and that all PC's are getting that DNS.

Problem solved. Apparently a tech put in the wrong subnet mask when installing the server. Therefore some of the computers were on the right subnet and some were not. Goes to show you how "simple things" can be overlooked.
