this is more of a networking question, i'll try it here first.

One of our offices closed 2 months ago, this user has taken his laptop (W2k Pro), and also a server (NT workstation) to his house to work from home. He frequently dials in from home (with the laptop only) to access his email. the attachments he receives from email need to be moved to the server, and of course they are much to big to put on a floppy (no cd burner either). So somehow i need to network these machines. here is where the fun comes in.

the laptop and server were previously in domains. the problem is they were in two separate domains, and the server never connects to its DC anymore.

the security side of this problem is, the user only has domain username and passwords on both machines (no local accounts). this means that if i remove either machine from the domain, i will have to give out the local admin username and passsword. Of course i cannot remove the laptop from the domain because the user needs to dial in and access the domain to get his email.

i originally had in mind of just connecting these two with a crossover cable and be done with it... but how do i get these machines to talk if they are in different domains, and one (the server) never accesses the domain anymore.

hope i have been clear
thanks

There are many ways to do this. A quick fix would be to set up a share on the laptop and leave Everyone Full Access. I would also probably join the NT machine to a workgroup with the same name as your Domain. From the NT machine create a shortcut that points to \\laptop IP address. This will display all the shares on the laptop. From there he can copy the needed file over to the NT machine. Not sure, but you may have to create an account on the laptop that matches the user and pass of the NT machine.
Try that and see how it goes...

Thanks,
